Battery Basics for Backup Power

How lithium-ion storage works and why energy density and cycle life decide how long a backup battery serves.

A lithium-ion battery stores energy through the reversible intercalation of lithium ions into electronically conducting solids. During discharge the ions move out of one electrode and into the other; charging reverses the flow. The process is reversible, which is what lets the pack cycle thousands of times.

Since lithium-ion batteries were first sold in 1991, their volumetric energy density has tripled while their cost dropped tenfold. Tripled density means a pack of the same capacity takes roughly a third of the volume it once did — the reason lithium packs fit inside compact desk-side UPS units.

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to contributors behind the development of lithium-ion batteries, recognising the work that made modern portable backup power possible.

Density and cycle life pull in different directions. A denser pack fits more energy into the same box, but how many charge-discharge cycles it survives determines when runtime starts to fall. An aged pack reports full charge yet sags under load within seconds.

For a UPS, the practical question is what the chemistry buys you in weight and footprint. Lithium-ion packs are lighter and smaller for the same capacity than lead-acid equivalents, while lead-acid remains common where weight is not a constraint.

Whatever the chemistry, runtime is quoted in minutes because the pack is sized to bridge a gap — save files, finish a write, start a standby source — not to carry a load for hours.

  • Intercalation: reversible ion insertion into solid electrodes.
  • Density: three times the energy per litre since 1991.
  • Cost: tenfold drop over the same period.
  • Cycle life: how many charge-discharge cycles before capacity fades.
  • Weight: lithium packs are lighter for equal capacity.
